Le livre du monde
“The Book of the World” is a cycle of seven paintings, begun in 2018 and completed in 2025, devoted to the universe of the Parisian suburbs, and more specifically to the South Essonne area, where the artist lived and worked. These very large-scale oil paintings on canvas, created from a body of photographic and film documents assembled by the artist, are conceived as visual commentaries on a contemporary reality (the suburbs), often perceived ambivalently in public discourse.
The expression “Book of the World,” through its reference to the Renaissance, evokes the idea of a world comparable to a book to be deciphered, in which things and beings function as signs requiring interpretation. Here, however, it is painting that assumes this task of interpretation, through the tensions and balances it makes visible, and the necessities it reveals beneath the apparent randomness of the scenes.
